About Adopting

Only adoptions of ADULT DOGS and ADULT CATS (10+ months of age) come with a "get-to-know-you" open adoption window built into the first 10 days of adoption. You may find that some animals need extra time to establish a good fit with an adopter. This initial 10-day window can be extended only with senior staff approval, but the adopter must make a reasonable effort to train the pet and stay in touch with us before requesting an extension of the "10-day window." We will do our best to provide guidance in hopes for a successful adoption.

Refunds are possible for returns during the approved, initial 10-day window, less an administration fee of $50. We are grateful for your consideration to donate a portion or all of your refund to Milo. For cases where an adult dog is returned after this initial 10-day window, there will be no refund of the adoption fee, and your fee becomes a tax-deductible donation. In other cases, after a dog or cat has been in the home for months or years, we ask adopters for a donation when returning an animal to assist with its continued care. We encourage adopters to let Milo know if they intend to re-home their pet, but Milo can NOT always take back adopted animals once they have been in a home for over 3 months, or if they have exhibited serious aggression towards others of their species or humans.

The Milo Foundation rescues thousands of adoptable animals (about six each day) that would otherwise be euthanized at City and County animal control shelters. Most of our rescues come from rural shelters where the animals have little chance at adoption or finding a good home. Some of our animals are also surrendered by people who are no longer able to care for or keep their pets. Milo does have a planned giving (bequest) program to care for pets when their caregivers no longer are able.

If you are interested in meeting or adopting an animal from Milo, please download and complete the appropriate Adoption Application:

» Dog/Puppy Adoption Application (MS Word)

» Cat/Kitten Adoption Application (MS Word)

The Milo Foundation database is a Microsoft SQL system. Apple-only formats like .pages cannot be accepted.
Please submit applications in .doc, .docx or .pdf format as a single file. Multiple files and photos of your handwritten application in .jpg and .txt formats are less compatible, but can be accepted.

If you are applying for a specific dog or cat, search for the animal on the www.milofoundation.org website first to find and verify the availability of the animal and its Milo ID number. Adopt-A-Pet ID and Petfinder ID numbers do not work on our website or in our database. Please fill out our Milo questionnaire/application (link above) and email it to info@milofoundation.org. Be sure to include in the subject line of your email the name(s) and Milo ID number(s) of the animal(s) for which you are applying. If you are applying generally for dogs or cats, please include "Canine Application" or "Feline Application" in the subject line. We will keep your application on file for an extended period, but please submit a new one if any of your information has changed since your last submission. Milo Point Richmond is our Adoption Center, where most of our adoptable animals arrive and are available.

Due to the high volume of applications for animals in the Bay Area, we may not be able to provide immediate feedback about your submission. We recommend that you come to meet the animals at Milo Point Richmond (MPR) during open hours 11am - 5pm, Wednesday through Monday (closed Tuesday). If you are interested in adopting a fostered animal, email us your application and follow up with a call to MPR, so we can arrange a meeting when the animal is ready for adoption. A Milo representative forwards the contact information of approved applicants to the foster person, who will arrange an introduction with the animal at the foster's home or at MPR. You can also attend Milo's mobile adoption events where fostered animals are often featured. A completed application is required in order to meet any of our animals at any location, so please bring a printout of your completed application or fill one out on-site when you come to meet them.

If interested in an animal residing at the Milo Sanctuary, please email your application or inquires directly to sanctuary@milofoundation.org. Milo Sanctuary staff will follow up from there with more information and can arrange an appointment for you to meet the animal at the Milo Sanctuary, located east of Willits, CA.

Special Note: Submission of an application for a particular animal does not guarantee you may adopt that animal. We receive many applications for popular breeds and puppies. Please follow up by email and watch the website for updates! We have lots of adoptable rescues and ask for your patience and understanding in finding the right animal for you.

Dogs and Puppies

The adoption fee for an ADULT is $400 and up
DOGS: All dogs at The Milo Foundation receive necessary veterinary care, are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, now including Flu vaccines, micro-chipped, and treated for parasites.  Dogs over six months of age are heartworm tested.  Some small male dogs can have lower fees.

Chihuahuas and some other small dogs may have special incentives/lower adoption fees.  There are so many of these sweet little ones dying in shelters AND "two-for-one" deals are happily considered for Chihuahuas and some small dogs. The little ones LOVE a buddy!

The adoption fee for a PUPPY is $450 and up. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS ON PUPPY ADOPTIONS. If you return a puppy for whatever reason, your adoption fee becomes a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE donation. Certain rare circumstances may warrant a partial refund (50%). PLEASE think hard about the commitment of raising a puppy! They are fragile and demanding. They need consistency, training, time, resources and patience. They want TLC and need a firm commitment!

All puppies at The Milo Foundation receive puppy vaccinations and de-worming. They are also micro-chipped and spay/neutered. Depending on how long Milo has had the puppy and its age, it will likely require additional vaccinations and veterinary care by the adopters. Milo will often cover the next vaccine after adoption, but our suggested donation for vaccinations is $20, available during open hours at MPR.

No puppy should be exposed to public dog parks, trails, or areas frequented by dogs, nor should they be exposed to un-vaccinated dogs, until at least three vaccinations have been given to the puppy. However, we do encourage early training and ongoing, early socialization of the pups. Visits with healthy dogs and trips to your family or friends' homes are encouraged! We also recommend that you enroll in puppy training classes as soon as possible! Puppies can go on walks on sidewalks in suburban and rural areas. City streets may have too much they can get into, so use good judgment.

Along with your Canine Adoption Application, please INCLUDE THE DOG'S NAME AND MILO ID NUMBER IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR EMAIL. Including the group name of the litter is also helpful. Please bring a printout of your application with you when you come to meet the dog or puppy of interest. Follow up with an email and be patient! Thanks.

Adopters must be 21 years of age or older, and renters must be able to provide written proof of landlord permission to keep the pet applied for in the residence. Certain breed types, sizes and puppies can be restricted by some landlords. For everyone's protection, please provide approval in writing.

Cats and Kittens

Do to a major increase in veterinary costs for feline spay/neuter, we have been forced to raise our fees.

FELINES: All cats and kittens are Leukemia tested. Cats over 6 months are also usually FIV or combo tested. All are vaccinated, have been spayed/neutered, micro-chipped and given parasite preventatives. Some young kittens are only FeLV tested, as the FIV test is inconclusive at a young age. If you are able, please consider an additional donation! Anything over $100 can be tax-deductible.

CATS (over 10 months): $150 and up  Sometimes we'll give a break on a pair. (We like it when bonded pairs can stay together!  These fees do not come close to covering Milo's costs, but we really want to get our adult cats into homes!

ALL CATS SHOULD BE INSIDE AT NIGHT. Our cats are not feral or outdoor cats.  They are people friendly, social felines, who like the company of humans, and the safety and warmth of a cozy home!

A few of our Sanctuary cats could do well as predominantly outdoor or "barn cats."  Please inquire with an email to sanctuary@milofoundation.org, if that is your preference.

KITTENS: $175 with a discount of $25-50 for a pair Kittens are ideally adopted out in pairs, or to homes with a compatible feline in residence, a buddy dog, or people who are home a lot.  Kittens are social, and a kitten left home alone for long hours every day can be very unhappy.... two is better!!  We reserve the right to charge more on occasion. Special new arrivals listed as KITTEN OF THE WEEK are $250. Talk to us – we want good homes for all kitties.

SENIORS: (7+YEARS OLD): $100  Senior cats are those who have "been around the block" (are older or have been with us a long time).

ALL KITTENS MUST STAY INDOORS, until at least 8-10 months age, though can be let out for brief periods under supervision to play and stretch their limbs, chase leaves.  Please do so only under safe circumstances, where they can be observed, and are away from busy streets. Cats should be given the outdoor vaccinations at a vet before becoming indoor/outdoor cats.  These vaccines are Leukemia and Rabies.

Along with your Feline Adoption Application email, please INCLUDE THE NAME AND/OR ID NUMBER OF THE PET OF INTEREST, or the group name of the litter.  Please bring a printout of your application with you when you come to meet the kitten or cat of interest.

Adopters must be 21 years of age or older, and renters must be able to provide proof of landlord permission to keep the pet applied for in the residence.

The PetFood Express My Mutt Program is a terrific opportunity for adopters and donors. With a donation of $250 or more, your pet can get a professional photo session with a BIG poster displayed at a Petfood Express near you. That poster will be yours to keep later! (Please note that baseline adoption fees are not considered donations for this program.)

Feline adoptions at MPR often come with a small bag of food (depending on availability) that they have been eating.

At Milo we try to help all kinds of pets needing rescue. We recognize that some of our animals are in high demand and can quickly find a loving home. These animals may have a higher adoption fee, because they can leave a financial legacy for the other animals in our care, which may need extensive medical treatment, or need more time to find a loving home.

Milo can NOT take back every animal we adopt out.  We do our best to re-home animals that for some reason need to be returned, but the reasons and the temperaments among other considerations - ultimately the time, effort and adoptability of the animal need to be weighed. A donation is required for all returns.  Also space is a primary reason we cannot accept every animal we have adopted out as a return for re-homing. For acceptance to our Sanctuary or our Adoption Center if six months or more have passed we will try, but can not promise being able to house your adopted animal for re-homing. Running them as an Assist on our website is possible.

If we are able to take your animal back we do require a re-homing fee/donation of $200 minimum for a dog or cat.  All veterinary records must come with the animal and a health check within the past 6 months testifying that the animal is in good health, including teeth and gums as well.  Seniors require a senior blood panel. All medication need to be filled and come with a refill and current prescription. In cases where life long care is needed at our Sanctuary a considerable donation will need to be discussed.

If you are no longer able to care for or keep your pets because of age or illness - Milo does have a planned giving (bequest) program to care for pets when their caregivers are no longer able. Click Here

As a No-Kill organization with two locations, we need your support. Any amount over the baseline adoption fee can be treated as a tax-deductible donation. We appreciate you caring enough to support the Milo Foundation's animals, and your willingness to give a deserving pet a loving home.
